Arkansas Spring Recap

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Sunday 5 April 2009 6:06 pm

Spring Training is officially over and the 2009 season starts tonight. Total, 8 different Arkansas natives spent some time in the Grapefruit or Cactus leagues this spring. If this season is even half as good as it was last year, Arkansas is set for another great year.

The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, Cliff Lee, was likely the most watched Arkansan in baseball this spring, and he did not fail to make the news, but not in a good way. He struggled in all 6 of his starts, allowing a total of 33 runs in 21.2 innings. The good news is he only walked 2 batters all spring. Despite is bad spring, Lee is scheduled to be the opening day starter for Cleveland on April 6th.

Unlike Lee, A.J. Burnett put together quite a good spring. Playing for his new team for the first time after signing his new 6-year $82.5 million dollar contract, Burnett started 5 games and went 3-0 with a 3.09 ERA, striking out 15 in 32.1 innings. His first start in 2009 will be on April 9 against the Orioles.

Dustin Moseley, a native of Texarkana, AR, earned a spot in the Las Angeles Angels starting rotation this spring after going 3-1 with 3.75 ERA. He likely won’t spend the whole season there, seeing that he is only in the rotation due to injuries to LA’s other starting pitchers. Cardinals’ Ryan Franklin is now the only Arkansas-born reliever in baseball. He pitched 11.1 innings for St. Louis and finished with 12 Ks and a 4.76 ERA.

Only two hitters will represent Arkansas in the upcoming season: Torii Hunter and Pat Burrell. Hunter had a very impressive Cactus League season, hitting .306 and hitting 5 homeruns. Burrell, who will likely serve as the Tampa Bay Rays DH, went 16 for 55, collection 15 RBIs.

Non-major leaguers Cody Clark and Craig Gentry also got a little time with their big league club this spring. Clark, a native of Fayetteville, AR, went 1 for 3 with Kansas City Royals. Gentry, born in Van Buren, AR, got a dozen at bats in with the Texas Rangers, going 5 for 12 with 5 runs scored. Neither of them will start the season on a major league roster.
