Angels remove Hunter from DL

The Los Angeles Angels removed Arkansas native Torii Hunter from the Disabled List Sunday. He had been out since July 10th with an Abductor strain in right side, causing him to miss the All-Star game.

Hunter, who was born in Pine Bluff, AR, was hitting .305 with 17 homeruns at the time of his injury. Since then, he has played three minor league rehab starts with class A Rancho Cucamonga, going 3 for 9 with a homerun. It was his first appearance in the minors since 2000.

Hunter had planned to rehab with AA Arkansas, but poor test results did not allowe him to do so.

Franklin sets new single-season saves mark among Arkansans

Arkansas native Ryan Franklin saved his 28h game for the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday night, setting a new single-season record among Arkansas. Previously, Atkins, AR native Ellis Kinder held the record, saving 27 games in 1953 for the Boston Red Sox.

Franklin, who was born in Fort Smith, AR, is the third Arkansan to save at least 20 games in a single season. He, Kinder and Johnny Sain, who saved 22 in 1954, are the only to do so.

So far this season, Franklin is 2-1 with a 1.20 ERa. His 28 saves is tied for second best in the National League. Only San Diego’s Heath Bell has more.

Arkansas product Todd called up to Cleveland

It’s been a busy season for former Arkansas Razorback pitcher Jess Todd. He started the season with AAA Memphis, was called up to the St. Louis Cardinals in early June, made his MLB debut on June 5th, two days later was sent back to Memphis, was traded to Cleveland on July 26th and on Wedneday, he was called back up the bigs by the Indians.

Todd now has the chance of playing for two teams in his first major league season, a rare accomplishment.

Todd, 23 pitched for the Arkansas Razorbacks in 2007. He went 9-3 with a 2.89 ERA with Arkansas before being drafted by the Cardinals in the 2nd round of the ‘07 draft. In his MLB debut, he pitched 1.2 innings for St. Louis on 3 runs.
