Cliff Lee sets strikeout record for Arkansans

AJ Burnett’s record of 231 single-season strikeouts by an Arkansan was broken on Tuesday, September 20th by Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee. Washington Nationals’ Ryan Zimmerman was Lee’s 232 strikeouts of 2011 following a called third strike in the 7th inning of Tuesday’s game.

Lee, a native of Benton, AR, had never recorded a season of 200+ strikeouts until this year. His previous high was 185, which he tallied up last season with Seattle and Texas. With likely one more start before the end of the season, Lee’s strikeout total will likely be increased. So far this year, he is 16-8 with a 2.38 ERA.

Burnett’s now-broken record was set in 2008.
